Grief doesn't always make sense

Loss can hit harder than you expect. Especially when you cared deeply. It shows up in waves. Shock, anger, guilt, a sadness that sits in your chest. It can wreck your sleep, your appetite, your ability to think straight. None of that means you're doing it wrong.

When it gets to be too much, you don't have to carry it alone. Our registered therapists offer online grief counselling across Canada, for whatever you're grieving, a person, a pet, a life that changed shape.

The people who'll sit with you in it

Grief counselling isn't about fixing you or rushing you through. It's having someone steady beside you while you process the loss, tell the story, and sit with the questions grief tends to raise.

These are the therapists who do that work.

Grief doesn't keep a schedule

Everyone grieves differently. Waves of sadness one day, anger the next. Some days numb. Some days guilty for not feeling enough. Whatever it looks like for you, it's normal, and you won't be judged for any of it.Grief counselling gives you somewhere to bring all of it. Not to rush it or tidy it up, but to understand it and find a way to carry it. The shape of that work depends on what you've lost.

  • Loss of Loved Ones: The death of a family member, a friend, or a partner can upend everything, your routines, your sense of the future, the ground under your feet. Grief therapy gives you space to process the loss at your own pace, with someone who won't push you toward "moving on" before you're ready.

  • Pet Loss: Losing a pet is a real loss, even when the people around you don't treat it that way. We honour the bond you shared and the genuine grief of their absence.
  • Life Transitions: Grief isn't only about death. Divorce, a career ending, an empty nest, a diagnosis, these carry their own grief, even when no one names it that way. Counselling helps you find your footing when life changes shape.

What grief counselling looks like with us

Grief counselling here is a shared process. You and your therapist, working through the difficult feelings together, making sense of what happened and what it means for you now.

We start with where you are. The overwhelm, the stuckness, the parts that don't have words yet. From there, we work through the pain at your pace, not toward some finish line, but toward a way of carrying the loss that you can live with.

Grief doesn't end on a schedule, and we won't pretend otherwise. What we offer is steady company through it, and space to grieve the way you need to.

Grief Counselling: Frequently Asked Questions

Is it too soon, or too late, to reach out?

There's no right time to start. Some people come in within days of a loss. Others reach out months or even years later, when the grief shows up in ways they didn't expect. You can begin whenever you feel ready, and the free consultation is a low-pressure way to see if now feels right for you.

Is there a right way to grieve?

No. Grief looks different for everyone. You might feel waves of sadness one day and anger or numbness the next. You might feel guilty for laughing, or for not crying "enough." None of that means you're doing it wrong. Counselling gives you a place to feel what you feel without judgment.

Does pet loss or a non-death loss count?

Yes. Grief isn't only about death. The end of a marriage, a career change, a move, or the loss of a beloved pet can all bring real grief. If something you cared about is gone, your pain belongs here.

Will my therapist try to get me to move on?

No. The work isn't about rushing you toward "closure" or telling you how you should feel. Grief counselling at The Dot is a shared process. Your therapist works alongside you to make sense of the loss and to support you while you carry it, in your own time.

Can grief counselling really work over video?

Many clients find that talking from home feels more comfortable, especially for something this personal. You're in your own space, which can make it easier to open up. All you need is a private spot, a device with a camera, and an internet connection. Sessions run on an encrypted platform, so what you share stays between you and your therapist.

How long will I need counselling?

There's no set timeline. Grief doesn't follow a schedule, and neither does this. Some people come for a few sessions to get through a hard stretch. Others stay longer to work through deeper questions that come up after a loss. You and your therapist decide together what makes sense for you.

Who will I work with, and what happens in the free consultation?

You'll be matched with a Registered Psychotherapist based on your situation and what you're looking for, you can read about each of them before you book. The consultation is a 20-minute conversation, not a session. There's no cost and no commitment. You can share a little about what's going on, ask questions, and see whether the therapist feels like the right fit. If it's not, that's completely okay.
