Feel like you get stuck in survival mode?

Sometimes, our perceptions of current situations are linked to an ‘original traumatic event’ that leave us feeling trapped, angry or lost.

Memories from that event can be triggered through sights, sounds or smells. Once triggered, the stored distress of the original trauma memory are mistakenly experienced when the brain accesses the emotions, thoughts, beliefs and physical sensations that occurred at the time of the event. This can create an overwhelming feeling of being back in that moment, or being “frozen in time.” In this way, your brain gets stuck in permanent fight/flight mode.

EMDR & Somatic therapy helps unblock your brain so you can start to naturally recover. They both have a direct effect on the way your brain processes information, releasing emotional experiences that are trapped in your nervous system. In simple terms, both EMDR & Somatic therapy helps ‘unblock’ the brain’s processing so that traumatic memories can become ‘ordinary’ memories. Repeated studies show that working with either EMDR or Somatic Therapy, people can rapidly experience the benefits of psychotherapy that once took years to make a difference.

What is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a therapy designed to help people heal from trauma, overwhelming experiences, or emotional pain. When something upsetting happens, our brain can get “stuck,” making it feel like the event is still happening, even years later. This can lead to intense emotions, flashbacks, or physical stress. EMDR works by guiding the brain to reprocess these memories, so they feel less overwhelming and more manageable.

Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR is more structured and often feels different, but it’s been extensively researched and is one of the most effective treatments for trauma and PTSD. It’s also helpful for anxiety, grief, and phobias. If you’ve felt stuck in pain or weighed down by emotional burdens, EMDR can be a powerful way to move forward.

What Is Somatic Therapy?

Somatic Therapy is a way to heal both your mind and body by helping them work together. When we experience stress or trauma, it can get stuck in the body, creating tension and discomfort. Somatic Therapy uses simple techniques like deep breathing, small movements, and grounding exercises to help your body let go of that stress and feel more relaxed and in control.

When something traumatic happens, it’s like an electrical charge gets stuck inside you, unable to move. That trapped energy can stay in your body, waiting to be triggered again by something that reminds you of the trauma. Somatic Therapy helps release this energy by working with your body’s natural signals. By paying attention to sensations like tightness, heat, or tingling, you can help your body let go of the charge, leaving you feeling lighter and calmer.

If you’re looking for a way to feel more at ease and in control, Somatic Therapy might be a good fit for you. It helps you connect with your body, let go of built-up stress, and move toward a healthier, more balanced life.

Do EMDR & Somatic Therapies Work Online?

Absolutely. Since Covid, much research has been done to test the efficacy of providing EMDR & Somatic therapies virtually and it has been shown to work just as well online as it does in person. For example, gentle tapping in EMDR (which you - the client control the pace of) can be used in place of eye movements and it provides equal benefits.
All our therapists are very experienced in online therapy, so if you have any questions or concerns, feel free to book a free 20 min consultation so you can see if online EMDR therapy or Somatic Therapy is right for you.
