I’ve Been on Both Sides of the Therapy Chair
I know therapy can feel uncomfortable. Opening up to someone new, not knowing what to expect, wondering if it’s even going to help. I’ve been a client myself, so I get it. My approach is to meet you where you are, without judgment or pressure. If you’re curious about working together, I offer a free 20-minute consultation so you can see if it feels like a good fit.
Why I Do This Work
I became a therapist because I know what it’s like to feel stuck, unsure, or disconnected from yourself. Growing up, I struggled with confidence and carried beliefs about myself that didn’t match who I really was. Over time, and through therapy, I began to see how those early experiences shaped me and how I could start to live differently.
As a dad now, I see how doing this work allows me to show up better for my kids and wife. I know how easy it can be for men, especially new dads, to push aside their own needs and feelings while trying to just power through to get things done. I’ve learned that slowing down, paying attention, and finding support can make all the difference.
My Approach To Counselling Includes EMDR, Somatic Experiencing and More
As a therapist, I have embraced training in multiple modalities so that I can offer you different options when it comes to improving your mental health and day to day life.
Some of the approaches I use include Somatic Experiencing, EMDR, Brainspotting, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). These modalities in particular I like
because they help you to tune into your mind and body, and your past and the present. If you’re interested, we can also talk about specifically what’s happening in your brain and nervous system, so the process feels more clear and less mysterious.
Also, even when the work gets deep, I make sure that we’ll have room for humour and lighter moments!
From Therapy To Therapist
I grew up in a small hockey loving town, in a big family, with a strict Catholic upbringing and more than a little conflict in the air. I was bullied and spent a lot of my youth feeling anxious, overwhelmed, and unsure of who I really was. Things started to shift when I joined a student conservation program. I spent my days in nature, working alongside people who didn’t dress, talk or act the same as everyone else, and it was a breath of fresh air. For the first time, I felt like I could just be me. I grew my hair out, started listening to a lot of Smashing Pumpkins and Rage Against the Machine, and began to question what life is all about. My sister encouraged me to see a therapist and that first experience with counselling gave me the courage to continue exploring the questions I had about both myself and humanity in general.
University was another turning point. I didn’t yet know what I wanted to do, but I knew I wanted my life to look different. Finishing my undergrad and moving away gave me space to continue figuring out who I was and who I wanted to be. Life is rarely just a straight line. There were short-lived relationships, false starts, job stress, and different therapists and mentors along the way. Over time, I began to see patterns more clearly and to understand why I did the things I did and the meaning behind some of my behaviours.
I learned the most from relationships where someone was willing to really see me, challenge me, and stay present while I figured things out. Those experiences shaped how I work now. I see therapy as a relationship that helps you see yourself more clearly, uncover what’s been getting in the way, and practice new ways of being yourself in connection with others. Therapy really is about being seen, supported, and encouraged to explore the parts of yourself you might avoid or overlook.
I Work with People who Feel Stuck, Anxious, or Disconnected
Do you often feel like you can’t ever fully let your guard down? Is there a worry that nobody would accept you if you just “let it all out”? Are your friends or family frustrated because you never want to go out, are you always looking for an excuse to cancel or back out on plans? If you are someone who feels like you don’t fit in anywhere, and who struggles with being able to connect or connect well with others, I get it, and I’m here for you. I support people who want to address their anxiety, parenthood challenges, self esteem, depression, identity, trauma, or unexpressed feelings.
Just as I was once that unsure teenager trying to figure things out, I also help younger people who might feel lost, anxious, or overwhelmed. Being a teenager today is incredibly difficult, and if someone feels different, or “other” in some way, talking to a therapist who’s been there themselves can often provide much needed support for that struggling young person.
Is Now The Right Time For Therapy?
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or just ready for something to shift, it might be time for you to take that next step. When therapy works, it can change everything, but finding the right person to talk to matters. If what I’ve shared here makes you curious and interested in learning more, reach out, and let’s talk.
