Therapy Isn’t Just Self Care, It’s Healthcare
As an experienced therapist, I’m a firm believer that caring for your mental health isn’t separate from caring for your physical health. How you feel in your mind absolutely impacts your body. If you’re new to therapy and are feeling hesitant about starting, please know that you being here, reading this, considering therapy, simply means you want to take better care of yourself. It’s also normal to feel a bit of a spark of nerves before you start something new (that’s a sign that you’re stepping into a moment of growth). I’ve spent nine years helping people navigate these exact moments. My goal as your therapist is to make sure you feel welcome, seen and heard in our sessions together.
A Real Conversation With Someone Who Gets It
I’ve been in your shoes. I have seen a therapist myself and I know that it can feel a bit odd to just share things with someone you don’t really know. Here’s what you can expect when we meet: You don’t need to show up with a script or the perfect words. We’ll start with the basics of what brought you here and let that lead the way. One thing I always tell my clients is that you’re the one in control of the session. I won’t ever push you to go anywhere you aren’t ready to explore, and we’ll focus on building trust and connection before we dive into heavier topics.
How EMDR and DBR Work
If you’ve tried talk therapy before and felt like something was missing, that’s where EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) and DBR (Deep Brain Reorienting) might be able to fill in the missing pieces for resolving long standing issues. Sometimes what’s needed is for you to learn how your brain is processing things on a deeper level. EMDR and DBR go beyond just talking about a problem, they help you actually process the root of the trauma or the attachment wounds that feel stuck. My clients often tell me it feels like a physical weight’s finally been lifted, and it’s incredible to see how quickly a perspective can shift when we use the right approach.
A Path Built On Real Life Experience
My journey to becoming a therapist wasn’t a straight line, and I think my work is better from experiencing a few other paths. Growing up, I found that people have always felt comfortable talking to me about their problems and I naturally enjoy listening to others and holding space for them. After graduating from high school and beginning university my goal was to become a social worker. I didn’t complete the program because life took me into another direction where I got married and then later moved to Italy for a couple of years. I spent a long time working in the film and television industry. While I enjoyed that work, I knew that I was meant for something else, something more meaningful and that was aligned with who I am as a person. I revisited my original hope of working in a helping profession and after months of research and reflection I realized that Psychotherapy was the ideal career path and in 2014 I began a program in existential and relational psychotherapy. In 2016 I began seeing clients and I haven’t looked back since!
