Mental Health Assessments

Specialized Assessments from A Medical Doctor for Ontarians

Your journey to Understanding Yourself Begins Here

At The Dot Canada, your mental health and well-being are our priority. That’s why we now are offering mental health assessment from a medical doctor. Dr. Martin Potter has been offering mental health and medical care for over 20 years and now, at The Dot, he can provide you with personalized assessments and medical support tailored to your unique needs.

The Value of an Assessment

Receiving an assessment is not about labeling your symptoms; it can be a vital step toward gaining a deeper understanding of your mental health and getting the support you need to live your life to the fullest.

An official assessment can:

  • Enable Accommodations: Ease the process of requesting accommodation at work, school, or living environment to help you perform to your best ability without undue stress.

  • Guided Mental Health Care Plans: Provide a clear path for mental health care strategies that are tailored to your specific needs, enhancing the effectiveness of your care.

  • Increase Self-Understanding: Help you and your loved ones understand your experiences and challenges. This can provide much needed empathy and support within your personal relationships.

  • Medication: With an assessment, and if agreed upon by Dr. Potter and yourself, he can prescribe medication and ensure you receive the appropriate dosage to effectively manage your symptoms. This focused approach aims to optimize your treatment plan for better daily functioning.

Who We Support

Our doctor provides thorough assessments for individuals aged 17 and older in Ontario, across a range of conditions, helping you understand and navigate your mental health journey. He provides assessments, medication management and continued care (or will recommend psychotherapy for continued care).

Do you speak french natively? Our doctor is fully bilingual in english and french.

We can provide mental health assessments for:

  • ADHD: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Having a later life assessment of ADHD can often feel like a lightbulb moment for adults. Suddenly the struggles you’ve faced make sense! With a clear assessment, you can finally move forward and discover strategies to manage ADHD specific challenges and harness your full potential.

  • Depression: When you know something is wrong, but you don’t have the word for it, getting a assessment can be a relief. Finding support in managing feelings of sadness or hopelessness is sometimes easier when you know what you’re dealing with. When you know what you’re trying to treat, there is more hope for a better tomorrow.

  • Anxiety: Finding out you have an anxiety disorder can relieve some anxiety. With that assessment, you can go on to find a therapist and learn techniques to cope with anxiety, reducing stress and improving your day-to-day peace.

  • Adjustment Disorders: When life throws unexpected challenges your way, feeling overwhelmed is a natural response. But if these reactions persist and start affecting your daily life, it might indicate an adjustment disorder. Recognizing this can be pivotal. Knowing the specific stressors causing your distress helps in finding the most appropriate coping strategies and support. This realization can lead to tailored interventions that help you regain control and adapt more healthily to life’s changes.

  • Panic Disorders: When you know you have a panic disorder, you can then set a plan in place to address those sudden episodes of intense fear or discomfort - and start to reclaim your inner calm.

  • OCD: Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is something you can manage, but first you need to know for sure that you have it. Once you have that assessment, you can find effective ways to manage obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors.

  • Mood Disorders: Speaking to a doctor and gaining clarity around bi-polar disorder - having confirmation that you do indeed have this mood disorder can be a huge relief. Once you know what you’re dealing with, then you can begin to properly navigate the complexities of mood fluctuations and stabilize your emotional health.

Medication Management and Blood Test Support:

With a medical doctor watching over your care, you can feel confident that he will ensure your treatment is as effective as possible with comprehensive medication oversight and blood testing, when necessary, all coordinated by our caring doctor.

Continued Care

A number of our therapists are trained in understanding and providing psychotherapy for each of the assessments above. Let us know if you would like to book a consultation with one of our therapists.
