Therapy Creates a Unique Environment For You to Learn and Explore More of Who You Are and Who You Can Become.

As a therapist, I am dedicated to offering compassionate, supportive and clinically informed care for the challenging times in your life. I’m a Registered Social Worker with a Masters of Clinical Social Work. I’ve been providing mental health services to folks for the past 15 years. Individuals and couples often seek out my services for help with relationship struggles, anxiety, grief, depression, trauma, communication, setting boundaries, and for support while navigating big life changes (moving, divorce, parenthood, graduation, retirement).

In Counselling, You Have The Time and Space to Speak Your Truth

I consider myself an introvert who likes people, and this quality can be quite helpful in therapy. It’s important for me to listen to your story, or the struggle you are experiencing,  without the need to interrupt often. For some, this can take a little getting used to! So many interactions these days are like a game of tennis, with us just waiting to hit our talking pieces back towards the other person. As your therapist, I’m here to actively listen to you, and when I speak, my only goal is to support your process and growth, because our time together is entirely about you, or you and your loved one (if we are doing relationship counselling).

My Approaches To Couples Counselling

As a relationship therapist, I’m a huge fan of using both The Developmental Model of Couples Therapy (DMCT) and Emotions Focused Therapy (EFT) for helping my clients to reconnect. EFT helps folks by putting the focus on the patterns in your relationship, where you may be getting stuck, and the emotions behind the behaviours that may be causing issues. When we understand and shift old emotional responses during difficult times, that’s when real and sustaining change can occur.

With DMCT, the emphasis is on the role of individual development, as well as how your relationship has developed. We compare how your emotional development in childhood may be impacting the development of your adult relationships, both romantic and otherwise. Relationships change over time, but significant others don’t always change at the same time or in the same way. That’s when conflict can arise, and can fester over time. Challenges come up when couples are not able to connect as well with a new developmental stage (such as a big move, becoming parents, or if there is a loss). This therapy can provide awareness about different developmental styles, and help significant others to reconnect, empathize and love each other in a way that is supportive and sustainable.

My main focus when working with those who’ve come to me for relationship support is to help you find new ways of communicating and responding to your loved ones worries and needs.

Psychodynamic Therapy Is My Go-To Modality For Individual Therapy

While I am trained in many different therapeutic modalities (CBT, DBT, ACT, IFS & more) Psychodynamic counselling is what I most often use with clients. This form of therapy is at its core about self-exploration, learning to recognize emotional blind spots, and understanding your specific relationship and communication patterns. This might seem simple on the surface, but it’s amazing how many layers of the onion you are able to peel away when you feel comfortable exploring your history, and behaviours. We often approach this with a few different questions such as:

●       Why do you do the things that you do?

●       Where did you learn your values?

●       Who are you now, and what and how would you like to grow or develop within yourself?

My Life Experiences Are A Part Of My Approach and Understanding

As a woman who has travelled more than a few trips around the sun, I have experienced many moments that you may relate to. Maturity and a life already lived may help me to better understand your own struggles. I’ve been married, and divorced, I’ve experienced loss and grief, found myself leaning too much on certain habits and substances, connected with faith and spirituality, sought support for my own healing journey, found perspective on my sexual identity, loved many and have felt loved in return. While I am here to listen to your story, please know that I have had many ups and downs in my own life, and this has helped me to accept and have compassion for those you may be experiencing.

This Is Your Journey, Your Story, Your Time

As a therapist, I often see people when they are feeling a little lost, or stuck in life. I’m here to simply help you map your way out of a current rut, or wrong turn on your path. If you feel ready to take the next step, reach out, I’m accepting new clients.
